Museum has systemized an archive belonged to Aadu Lass

After several years of proper work, museum has organized archives collected by Aadu Lass, the legendary road engineer, his manuscripts of speeches and articles.

Aadu Lass was responsible for road management practically over 30 years and he was an initiator of the Estonian Road Museum. The museum received his archive after his passing away in 2002. The collection consisted of 6000 items. The oldest of them dates back to 1940. There are different protocols, reports, road maintenance projects, maps etc. 

For decades Aadu Lass collected different information about Estonian bridges. The first schemes date back to 1956. You can find interesting correspondence about rafts on the river Emajõgi, bridges on the river Kasari, preparations for Kärevere bridge building.  Among the documents one can find documents about acting in case of emergency or traffic safety statistics of decades. A part of the archive consists of Aadu Lass´s articles, speeches and his biographical records. It could be of interest to researchers.

Rain Rikas, the chief treasurer mainly worked with the documents. It took nearly 15 years with intervals to organize them. The list of Aadu Lass´s materials is available at www. muis.ee.

Aadu Lass was born on January 18th 1928 in Tallinn. After graduating Tallinn Polytechnical Institute in the beginning of 1950s he first started working in Haapsalu and two years later he moved to Tallinn where he was an engineer of the Road Department for 2 years and then  33 years a chief engineer. From 1990 to 2001 Aadu Lass was a counsellor of general director. He was responsible for development of principles of traffic code and economics of roads.

In 2018 Aadu Lass annual reward was established by the Road Administration and the Estonian Asphalt Pavement Association
