The Varbuse post station was established in the mid-19th century in response to the growing demand for mail transport on the Tartu–Võru postal route, which became regularly operational during the Crimean War. In 1861, the Livonian Knighthood leased 28 hectares of land from the owner of Varbuse Manor, and construction of the post station began. Together with the Maidla post station, the complex was designed and built under the supervision of Tartu master builder August Franz Königsmann, with construction work carried out by local farmers. The complex was completed in the autumn of 1863 and built in a style characteristic of southern Estonia, combining limestone and red brick.

The post station was a state-run (“crown”) institution maintained through the Livonian Knighthood. Operations were conducted economically, and the late 19th century was marked by frequent tensions between the supervising director and the tenant commissioner responsible for daily management. Documentation of the post station’s everyday life — its staff, inventory, and horses — has survived only in fragments, leaving gaps in our understanding of how the station functioned in practice.

The expansion of railways and the development of motorised transport led to the decline of horse-drawn mail services at the end of the 19th century. Post stations ceased operations amid revolutions and wars, and the Varbuse post station was permanently closed in 1931. In 1935, the buildings were taken over by the Kanepi road maintenance centre. Road masters were trained specialists responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of roads. In the 1930s, the road master working in Varbuse was Friedrich Hussar.

Today, the former post station is home to the Estonian Road Museum — a place where the history of roads and traffic is connected with a living environment and cultural heritage. The museum also collects and preserves memories and photographs related to the Varbuse post station and the people who worked here, and invites visitors to share their own historical materials.
