Children's Museum

The Children’s Museum opened in spring 2016 together with a new permanent exhibition and is designed primarily for the museum’s youngest visitors. An entire floor is dedicated to children, offering space for discovery, playful activities, and calm, focused exploration. Here, children can read, play, listen to stories, and let their imagination run free.

The Children’s Museum brings together educational games, a puppet theatre corner, reading materials, and the Chamber of Secrets, which introduces the world of fairy tales. Accompanying children throughout the exhibition is the museum’s mysterious mascot, Ajaloom, who helps them understand time and clocks and invites them to explore what this invisible, ever-moving thing called time really is.

The themes of the Children’s Museum take young visitors on a journey through everyday life, travel, time, and stories.

Life at the Post Station introduces postal services from a time when letters were passed from hand to hand and the journey was just as important as the message itself. Children can step into the role of postal workers, write a real letter at the postmaster’s desk using a quill and ink, and send greetings on their way just like in the old days.

The Travel theme explores why and how people set out on journeys in the past, what they took with them, and how they passed the time on long trips. Suitcases from different eras tell stories of travellers from their time and invite children to consider whether travel was more of an adventure or a challenge.

The Time theme focuses on why time sometimes seems to drag and at other moments flies by. Visiting the clock room, children can explore various timekeeping devices hidden inside and discover how people have measured and understood time throughout history.

The Map of Estonia theme helps children better understand their home country. Although Estonia is small, navigating a map is not always easy. Visitors explore where Estonia begins and ends, how long distances really are, and where the place they call home is located.

The Fairy Tales and the Museum theme comes together in the Chamber of Secrets — a miniature museum filled with objects and stories familiar from fairy tales. It is a place where even the youngest visitors feel at home and can be experts in a world they already know well.
